Ulviyya Ali

Ulviyya Ali (Guliyeva) is a prominent journalist who worked for Voice of America from 2019 to 2025 until the outlet’s closure. She began her journalism career in 2012 and was highly active on Twitter documenting Azerbaijan’s human rights abuses. Her work was regularly cited by international media.

Ali had been working under a travel ban for several months and repeatedly questioned by police before she was finally arrested during the early morning hours of May 7 during a police raid on her home. Allegedly, she was beaten by police during the arrest.

Ali has been charged with involvement in the case against Meydan TV journalists, despite her never working for the outlet.
